Top 50 Chiang Mai Cafes

January 13, 2016

After living in Chiang Mai for a month and having previously visited it, I had plenty of time to visit dozens and dozens of coffee shops around the city, drink delicious coffee, and munch on sugary sweets. There are a ton of café’s in Chiang Mai suitable for cat lovers, book lovers, and quirky design lovers alike. Whether you’re looking to escape the streets of Chiang Mai teeming with pushy tuk-tuk drivers or wipe off your sweat cool off from the heat, each cafe has a unique ambiance of its own.

I visited at least one to two new cafe’s every single day to simply get work done. Otherwise I visited multiple cafes, and dedicated those days solely to seeking out the best cafe’s and wifi in Chiang Mai. Living in the Nimman area made this task very easy, as did driving a motorbike (in exchange for a sore ass).

There’s so much coffee to be had, sugar to be downed, and brownies to be indulged, that one wonders how they will ever have enough time for it all. Here is a list of the top 50 cafes in Chiang Mai. Pick whichever one suits your fancy and go down some caffeine.

NIMMAN AREA

Librarista

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This cafe, while small, has funky, colorful décor situated out front and inside. There is a relaxing fountain in between a ton of decorative seats which is perfect for those looking to work. You could easily lose yourself in their library section and spend the day staring at books and forgetting about any of the work you might have to do.

You have two hours of free wifi (they give you a username and password). This cafe is a bit on the more expensive side, but you’re paying for a futuristic, outdoor atmosphere. If you’re not looking to drink coffee, I highly recommend the mixed berry smoothie!

This cafe is also a beer garden and has an ultra rad Nespresso Corner inside.

Wifi: Yes, two hours free

Price: 70-100 baht

Located on Nimmanhaemin Road, Soi 5.

Marble Arch Cafe & Restaurant

top 50 chiang mai cafes

London lovers look no longer, this Thai cafe meets the British equivalent of one in the UK. A British guard stands outside as you enter the cafe, which is decorated with gray comfortable chairs and long, workable tables that face outside.

They encourage customers to use the wifi no longer than one hour due to high electricity costs, which is understandable. The A/C inside is a plus, too. Coffee is around 55-70 baht while smoothies are around 90 baht.

Wifi: Yes, one hour

Price: 55-90 baht

Located on Nimmanhaemin Soi 9.

Kaweh Cafetop 50 chiang mai cafes

One of the best parts about this cafe is that it’s open 24 hours. It’s perfect for you night owls who only manage to get your work done between 2 and 6 A.M.

The cafe is big and has a ton of tables and work desks spread throughout the place. There are plenty of chargers, and the wifi is one of the best I’ve used. Coffee is around 75 baht. They also serve food, such as spaghetti, curry worst, sandwiches, and yogurt.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 75-90 baht

Located on 64 Siri Mangkhalachan Road

Drip for Friends Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

I walked past this place quite a few times before ever popping inside. It’s very tiny, there are only a few seats at a long table against a window. The barista is very friendly and handed me a menu with a ton of choices of different espresso’s, lattes, and cappuccinos. I ended up ordering a latte for around 65 baht and was surprised at how flavorful and strong it was. I loved the interior too, it was a chic design with a vintage twist.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 65-80 baht

Located on Nimmanhaemin Soi 17

Wake Up Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This is another 24-hour cafe in Chiang Mai. The interior has a rustic, modern design, with circular benches and a low ceiling with lights and swings hanging from it. It almost feels like you’ve entered a tree house, with the white walls and wooden benches and cactuses as decoration. There is also outdoor seating and plenty of outlets. A lot of young Thai students hang out here too, so it’s a great place to meet studious locals.

Wifi: Yes, four hours free

Price: 59-89 baht for coffee

Located on 30 Nimmanhaeminda Road

Ristr8to

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This cafe is rated as one of the top cafes in Chiang Mai. They have the best coffee (and most expensive) I’ve ever had. They praise that ‘coffee is their passion, and art is their life.’ It’s a bit pricey, but the quality of their coffee shows why. It’s a bit difficult to get work done in this cafe since it can be quite noisy and is a bit small, but it’s definitely one worth checking out. There’s also Ristr8o Lab Café down the road which has additional seating available.

Wifi: Yes

Price 90-120 baht

Located on 15/3 Nimmanhemin Road

Happy Hut

top 50 chiang mai cafes

You’ll find local Thai students hanging out at this modern cafe. Hot pink chairs and long wooden desks make up the interior. They serve a wide range of coffee, smoothies, and teas. They also have roti and a couple different sandwiches available. I found the wifi to be a bit slow compared to a few of the other cafe’s I visited.

Coffee Wish

top 100 cafes chiang mai

One of the older cafes in Chiang Mai, this cafe is in the Nimman area and is situated on a main road. Once inside, the outdoor rush will be swept away with a steaming cappuccino, ordered from the extensive drink menu. Relax in one of the many armchairs inside or on one of the benches outside. They also serve food and dessert, though I wasn’t too impressed with their food.

De May

Tea time, anyone? Take a step back from the bustling city and into this vintage cafe, which serves coffee in delicate cups with floral design. Flowers, teddy bears, and paintings hang on the wall next to vintage clocks and pictures from the 1950’s. The wifi is fast and reliable. I recommend trying one of their waffles (banana or strawberry), they are delicious!

Goat Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

A hipster, New York fashionista feel, this cafe is quirky and comfortable. Funky chairs and designs make up the interior of this cafe, which is tucked away in the Nimman area. The coffee is strong and delicious, and the ambiance of the cafe allows any nomad to get a lot of work done. Obscure paintings line the wall and odd styled chandeliers hang from the ceiling. Relax on one of the work tables or on one of the funky chairs.

9th Street Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

A more typical cafe in the Nimman area, this place is ideal for getting work done. They have a few high desks and chairs, convenient for digital nomads. There are a few comfortable chairs, but otherwise, this is the place to get work done. The interior is small and gray, something you would find in an urban city such as New York. They have a delicious blueberry yogurt frappe, along with very good coffee, all at reasonable prices. They have some typical cafe snacks, such as croissants, brownies, and cakes.

Price: 60-85 baht

Mingmitr Coffee

top 100 cafes chiang mai

A simple cafe for getting work done in the Nimman area. Their wifi is fast and reliable, and they offer regular coffee as well as Thai coffee. It’s quite small, and mostly made of work tables that are wrapped around the room. The staff is very friendly. Try their Mingmitr coffee!

Roastniyom Coffee

top 100 cafes chiang mai

A cafe that’s wrapped around a tree! This is standard cafe in Chiang Mai with delicious cappuccinos. The place is usually pretty busy, and with limited tables, it may be tough to find a place to work. I found their wifi to be incredibly slow at times, especially compared to some of the neighboring cafes. I kept going back however because their cappuccino’s were that good.

Ninety-Four Coffee

top 50 chiang mai cafes

Ninety-Four Coffee has a peaceful ambiance. It’s spacious indoors and the outdoor area is full of low and high tables and the sound of relaxing fountain water. They offer smoothies and different coffee options, all for a reasonable price. Their wifi is quick and reliable as well. This cafe is on one of the quieter streets in the Nimman area, making it a perfect place to sit and relax outside. They have a few different locations around Chiang Mai, but the one in the Nimman area is my favorite.

Nine-One Coffee

Bitter Sweet

top 100 cafes chiang mai

This cafe is in a pretty random spot near the Kad Suan Kaew shopping center, but their cheap coffee and comfortable workspace interior make up for it. There’s an indoor and outdoor area, wifi, and garden like decorations. Most of the people coming to this cafe are the pedestrians in need of saving from the intense heat outside. It’s quiet inside as long as the door is closed. The glass windows let in a lot of natural light, ideal for working and keeping your spirits lifted as you stare at a computer screen.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 40-55 baht

Located on: Near Shell gas station, Huey Kaew Road

Somkiat Style Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This is one of my favorite cafes in the Nimman area. The owner has stylish, wicked long hair that gives off friendly, good vibes. It’s one of the smallest cafes I’ve been in, but the long table and comfortable couch make the environment seem personal and workable. The coffee is delicious and cheap, and they also have cheap smoothies and homemade cookies (which I still have yet to try).

Bull & Bear Cafe

Bright, spacious, and modern, this cafe is a great place to get work done. There are a lot of working desks and tables in the cafe and the coffee is cheap and strong. The wifi is fast, and they sell little snacks like Kit Kats and Pocky sticks. I really liked the amount of natural light that came into this cafe. Coffee is 48 baht and on the cheaper side, while iced coffee is 68 baht.

Doctor Gen_Y Lab Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This lovely cafe is set up like a lab, hence the name. They serve standard coffee drinks and tea and an array of healthy drinks to flush out your system. They also have cakes and brownies for sale. There is plenty of room to work and plenty of places to charge your laptop. The wifi didn’t work for me, but my computer picked up wifi from across the street at Bull & Bear Cafe (that’s how strong their wifi is!). I’m not sure if it was my laptop or not.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 55-75 baht

Located on: Soi Sirimangalajarn Road

QQ Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This place looks like a storage facility and a contemporary art museum got married and had a kid. Photography from around the world is displayed on the wall. Make yourself comfortable at one of the many high desks located around the room. I’ve seen this cafe get quite busy in the afternoon, however, I’ve also seen it completely dead. They have a very large menu with different teas, smoothies, and food. I highly recommend the milk green tea with pearls!

Smoothie Blues

top 50 chiang mai cafes

The wide variety of breakfast items will have you coming back to this cafe over and over again. A tiny cafe with a larger outdoor seating area, they serve delicious breakfast items, smoothies, and coffee. I had the egg, cheese, and avocado sandwich with a cappuccino, and it was the perfect way to start my Monday morning. It’s a bit pricey but you’re paying for a huge portion. Unfortunately there isn’t wifi at this cafe, but it’s nice to disconnect from social media for a little while!

The Healthy B Cafe

Tucked away next to Librarista, this cafe boasts healthy eating and drinking. They have a food menu and different healthy smoothies. There’s a small seating area with comfortable chairs and good tables to work on. Their wifi was fast and the baristas were very friendly and smiley!

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This is a gallery and cafe. They boast unique art and crafty design. It’s a very cute, tiny cafe that brings the customer a new experience when they’re enjoying their meal. Three huge circular windows let in a lot of light and compliments the large stainless table. They offer pesto bagels, smoked salmon bagels, omelettes, and a ton of other different breakfasts and different smoothies. I loved their tables and the room full of artwork for sale adjacent to the cafe. The cafe is quite small, so get there early to get a table! I kept coming back to this cafe because their cappuccino is delicious. Make sure you try the eggs Benedict, too!

WEST OF CHIANG MAI CITY

Cafe de Oasis

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This cafe serves delicious breakfasts at a reasonable price. It’s a cafe that’s set within a garden. Tall bushes and potted flowers surround it all. Jazz music sets a relaxing ambiance which makes you feel like you’ve walked into a backyard tea party (and should be wearing a long yellow dress and holding an umbrella).

Wifi: Yes

Price: 60-80 baht

Located on: 202/9 Moo1,Tambon Chang Puak

Sky Cafe

top 100 cafes chiang mai

This cafe is very small, with a tiny outside seating area, but it has a very personal feel that other cafes don’t have. It’s the kind of place you could keep going back to and get to know the owner of the cafe. One of the perks about this place is that it’s incredibly cheap, coffee is around 35-50 baht. Not really a place to get work done, but more of a place to enjoy a nice cup of coffee in Chiang Mai. This cafe is located directly on the road so it can get a bit noisy, but there is a gorgeous pond across the road that gives it that sort of Thai city feel.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 35-50 baht

Located on: 206/67 Chiang Mai

Doi Luang Coffee

top 100 cafes chiang mai

This cafe has a large indoor and outdoor area, making it feel more like someone’s house than a cafe. The interior is vintage and quaint, while the exterior has a natural feel, with picnic tables and tree trunks. It’s not the best coffee I’ve had in Chiang Mai, and I feel like you’re paying for the atmosphere more than the actual drink.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 50-70 baht

Located on: Canal Road and Soi Chang Kian

Penguin Ghetto

top 50 chiang mai cafes

I loved how this cafe was decorated! A large bookshelf full of (you guessed it) penguins and other tiny trinkets. I wouldn’t recommend this cafe to get a lot of work done, as it’s very small (only one table inside). There are a few outdoor tables and a small upstairs area. They serve food such as lasagna.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 55-70 baht

Located on: Moo 1, Mueang Chiang Mai District

Bay’s Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This was one of my favorite cafes! It’s mostly outdoors, and a bit pricey, however, I enjoyed the pleasant, hippy vibe it gave off. It’s one of the best coffee’s I’ve had, as Bay knows what he’s doing when he brews! He uses local beans as well as beans from other places, so you’re getting a unique taste as opposed to the same old coffee. Bay is passionate and loves what he does and you can see this through his coffee and food.

They serve sandwiches, wraps, smoothies, and salads. Their food is delicious and healthy. It’s a great place to get work done on a nice day.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 80-120 baht

Located on: 15/5 Moo 1, Soi Sudjai

Hana Zono

top 100 cafes chiang mai

There were quite a few Thai students working in this cute, Japanese styled cafe. It’s quite small, an ideal place for those of you who like cozier and more comfortable places to work. They have cafe snacks such as cookies and cakes and average priced coffee. It’s definitely a place to come if you’re looking for something quiet and away from the normal chitter chatter that goes hand in hand with a larger cafe.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 55-70 baht

Located on: Suan Dok Road

The Barn

top 100 cafes chiang mai

I really enjoyed The Barn. They have delicious food for 89 baht (try their red curry or chicken teriyaki) and really good coffee. The interior is decorated like a barn (go figure). Everything is painted white, with floral cushions and comfortable couches. Flowers, horse trinkets, and even a cat make up the interior, while aluminum chairs and fake trees are on the outside. The staff is really nice too, and the wifi is really fast.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 55-100 baht

Located on: Srivichai Soi 5

Inbox Coffee Bar

top 50 chiang mai cafes

The interior was unlike any cafe I have been to thus far. I felt like I entered a crayon box and a coloring book. The exterior is painted blue, while the interior has stuffed animals on display and doodles on the walls. I loved it! The tables are quite low, so it’s not an ideal place to get work done, but it’s still doable. There was an optimistic, happy vibe about this place that I really enjoyed.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 45-70 baht

Located on: Mu Ban Dao Dueng

Paper Spoon

top 100 cafes chiang mai

Another quaint, cozy cafe in Chiang Mai. It’s surrounded by flora and in the shade, making it look like a backyard tree house. This cafe is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It’s off the beaten path and surrounded by nature and mountains, which makes it the perfect get away from the city. I felt like I was breathing in the fresh air and immediately felt relaxed the second I stepped foot here.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 55-65 baht

Located on: Su Thep

FaBB Coffee Roasters Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

You can tell this cafe is serious about their coffee the second you step foot inside. Coffee beans line the walls behind the register, and the entire cafe is filled with the aroma of fresh coffee beans. This cafe was another one of my favorites, but the most expensive one I went to. You can tell by the upscale, modern design. White, plush cushions, exposed metal decor, and suave interior makes one feel like they just walked into a cafe in New York City. However, this is a place I could come to and curl up with a good book and read all day with a steaming hot latte.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 100-150 baht

Located on: 91/11 Moo 5

Baan Suan Cafe

top 100 cafes chiang mai

Truly escape the bustling city streets of Chiang Mai and head into the mountains. This cafe was huge, but unfortunately doesn’t offer wifi. They offer a wide range of cheap food, coffees, and deserts. Sit in one of the hammocks and relax over a river or nestle into one of the couches and tables situated in between the trees.

Wifi: No

Price: 40-100 baht

Located on: 170, Moo 3, Tambon Mae Hia

Aries Sheep

top 100 cafes chiang mai

This cafe was another one of my favorites, solely because of the design. Funky, swinging chairs, outstretched umbrellas, and sheep roaming around the fields surrounding the cafe only make up a small part. The interior is inviting as well. They offer finger foods like french fries and spring rolls. The setting around this cafe is simply beautiful. The coffee is cheap, too!

Wifi: Yes

Price: 35-60 baht

Located on: 700 Year Road

A/sa/ma Cafe
top 100 cafes chiang mai

This cafe was extremely tiny with only a few stools inside the actual cafe, but the setting around the cafe is worth a visit. There is a large lake next to it, which makes sipping on a cup of iced coffee ideal. It’s in a quiet area and is the perfect escape from the city center. They’re serious about their coffee here, which is very strong, so come here when you need that extra energy boost you’ve been looking for.

CENTER OF CHIANG MAI

Into the Woods

top 50 chiang mai cafes

The woodsy decorations, detailed mural, and mini library were my favorite parts about this cafe. You feel like you’re walking into a third grade classroom when you open the door, and all of your stress is immediately lifted. Their coffee ranges from 45-55 baht, so it’s pretty cheap. It’s also a great place to get work done, there are plenty of tables and chairs to choose from, and the library is a plus. They also serve food and dessert.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 45-55 baht

Located on: 191-193 King Prajadhipok Sriphum Road

Rich Coffee House

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This is another tree-house like cafe. Winding stairs through the bushes lead to a hidden seating area. I felt like the chirping birds and soft waterfall drowned out the Chiang Mai traffic here. This cafe is in a good, central location, making it easy to get to if you’re in the city center. There’s also indoor seating with air conditioning for those of you looking to escape the heat.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 60-80 baht

Located on: Rachadamnoen Road

The Corner Restaurant

top 50 chiang mai cafes

The busy streets of Chiang Mai seem to be put on mute once you enter this cafe. The outdoor area is surrounded by vines and leaves. You’ll feel as though you’ve just discovered The Secret Garden.

This café has free wifi, though I couldn’t find any charging points. Their orange juice is so fresh and delicious, and you’ll be spending around 70-100 baht for coffee and food. Try their muesli, fruit, and yogurt!

Wifi: Yes

Price: 50-100 baht

Located on the corner of Phra Sing

Cafe de Thaan Aoan

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This super cozy café is situated in the heart of the city. I felt like I was sitting in my grandma’s house, and felt like I could stay there all day (with a batch of cookies). It’s quiet and relaxing, and a great place to get a lot of work done. They have food and free wifi, although they only have a couple charging points.

This café is averaged priced, you’ll spend around 70 baht for a coffee and a bit more for food (their red curry is delicious).

Price: 70-100 baht

Located on 154/5 Prapokklao Rd

Chiang Mai Cowgirl Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

Alice in Wonderland meets Little Red Riding Hood in this café. Seating is around a giant wooden tree, and you feel as though you just escaped the bustling streets of Chiang Mai and entered an enchanting forest. I stumbled upon this cafe by accident and am so happy I did.

The benches and seats are wooden, too. It’s as if you’ve found a secret spot in the middle of the woods and set up shop. I found this coffee shop to be quite cheap as well. They have free wifi and Thai food available.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 40-85 baht

Located on 95 Ratpakinai Road.

Libernard Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

I felt like I discovered one of Chaing Mai’s hidden secrets here (or invaded on a local Thai’s home). It’s hidden at the end of an alley way. A large gate welcomes your entrance as you walk into this cafe nestled within walls and bushes. They have a lot of different food options as well as coffee. This was more of a place one would come to relax and catch up with a friend. Try their banana pancakes!

Wifi: Yes

Price: 80-110 baht

Located on: 36 Chaiyaphoom Road

Woo Cafe

top 100 chiang mai cafes

Part cafe, part restaurant, part shop. This cafe serves a lot of Thai dishes as well as fancy desserts. I felt like I needed to wear a fancy dress with white gloves and high heels as I walked into this cafe. It’s not a place to come and get work done, but more of a place to go out to eat and sit outside. It was very busy when I visited in the afternoon.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 90-120 baht

Located on: 80 Charoen Rat Road

Cat House

top 100 cafes chiang mai

This cafe/restaurant has delicious burritos and quesadillas! I was craving Mexican food and am so glad I found this hidden gem. Their burrito is cheesy and packed with rice and beans, and their quesadilla has a ton of veggies and chicken for that protein and veggie punch. This cafe is very open, no windows or doors. Their food is really cheap too (burrito and quesadilla was 90 baht each) and great quality. I wouldn’t necessarily come here to get work done, but there are a few comfortable chairs to relax on.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 50-120 baht

Located on: 25 Chaiyapoom Road

Graph Cafe

top 50 chiang mai cafes

I was shocked when I got to this cafe. The amount of people squished inside this little box was very humorous, it looked like Chiang Mai cafe version of a clown car. It’s tucked away in the streets of Chiang Mai and surrounded by Thai restaurants and local food (there’s even a vegetarian buffet right near by). The tininess of the cafe adds to its cozy atmosphere and relaxing ambiance. Their coffee is strong, but I would not come here to get work done!

Wifi: Yes

Price: 50-80 baht

Located on: Ratvithi Lane

Ponganes Espresso

top 50 chiang mai cafes

Another odd cafe in Chiang Mai, this cafe has no tables or chairs. It’s a hip sort of modern looking cafe, one you would find tucked away in the streets of San Francisco. This was one of the best coffee’s I’ve ever had though, so in my opinion they excel in coffee taste more than atmosphere. There is one long bench on one of the walls, but otherwise, it’s standing time for you all! Really good coffee for those of you on the go.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 60-90 baht

Located on: 133/5 Ratchapakinai Road

Miss Cornery

top 50 chiang mai cafes

Located on the corner! It’s a tiny shabby chic cafe with vintage chairs and quirky music. They serve coffee, cake, and pasta. If you’re looking for a caffeine and carb fix, this is the place to go. Their food is so delicious and the atmosphere is welcoming.

Ahka Ama La Fattonia

top 50 chiang mai cafes

This cafe is not to be missed! It’s popular for their quality coffee and cheap prices. It’s not an ideal place to work because of the lack of tables, but is a good place to relax away from the main road in Chiang Mai. The baristas here are definitely crafted in the espresso and cappuccino making art. Their coffee beans are roasted to perfection and skillfully crafted to a delicious and refreshing cup of joe.

Wifi: Yes

Price: 50-60 baht

Located on: 9/1 Mata Apartment

Secret Cafe in Town

top 50 chiang mai cafes

I loved this cafe! They have beautiful artwork on display upstairs in a large white room. There are random art displays on the first floor too, which make you feel like you’re in an art exhibit as you’re sipping your coffee. It’s quiet and a good place to either chat with a friend or get some work done (although there aren’t high desk tables).
